Mind Mastery For Success

Sub Head: Talk on thinking techniques

MANY people are told that the mind has no limitations and one can achieve wonders with it. But how do you free your mind for success? Sunita Gill gave some tips at a talk on ‘Intuitive Intelligence’ at the Malaysia Festival of the Mind II held at Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman (KTAR) in Kampar recently. Sunita Gill, who is managing partner of Ultramind ESP Systems, said the mind had a language of its own.

“The mind thinks in the form of pictures. When we use our mind, we must translate words that we think about into pictures,” said Sunita Gill, 39.

She said the mind was not limited by time and space and therefore one was able to picture what was in front of one’s house or a past incident in a split second. For students who were thinking of achieving good results in their exams, they must think of excellent results in the result slips, she said. So when one used the mind to think of the achievements, the mind must picture them, she added. However, she noted that one must be in a relaxed state in order to use one’s mind to solve challenges and problems. Sunita Gill also presented the audience with some exercises which would relax them.

“When one is stressed out and worried, that is the worst time to make a decision,” she added.

The two-day festival was jointly opened by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali, Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement (MMLM) chairman Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and MCA secretary-general Datuk Ong Ka Chuan. It was jointly organised by MMLM, KTAR and Utar while The Star was the media sponsor. Alex Ow, who spoke on de Bono’s thinking skills, captivated the audience with his talk on ‘Management tools - six thinking hats’. Ow, who is managing director of Infor Resources System Sdn Bhd, said the six thinking hats method provided a framework for thinking which helped to solve problems. It looked at problems in six different perspectives.

“We talk about having shorter but more productive meetings and increasing team productivity,” he said.

He added that some corporate bodies that had employed the six thinking hats method were able to reduce meeting times by between 25% and 40%. He said the method used different colours for the six hats – red, yellow, green, white, yellow, black and blue – to symbolise how the user could focus on a problem and come up with the solutions.
